Wisconsin River Dressed in Purple

Sometimes the most interesting colors of sunrise occur prior to sunrise itself. Starting about 2 hours before sunrise, the heavens above first begin to be brightened by the sun. An hour or so before sunrise you can begin to notice a faint glow at the horizon.  Civil twilight begins a half hour before sunrise and is heralded with a deep orange glow.

At about 20 minutes before sunrise, the “purple red” can occur.  When conditions are right, the upper rays of the rising sun will be filtered by the atmosphere and provide purple hues. If the light shines on clouds or dust particles high in the atmosphere, a purple glow will be cast throughout the sky and landscape.

The image above was taken on a very cold morning at 20 minutes before sunrise. It is easy to see very high flying clouds that reflected delicate purple hues to the water below.
