Sandhill Cranes on the Buena Vista

During October, sandhill cranes begin to congregate on the Buena Vista Grasslands in central Wisconsin.

Sandhill Cranes are generally seen as pairs during most of the summer but as fall approaches they begin to flock together. Groupings of several hundred cranes feeding in fields is a common site during October. As evening approaches, they leave in small groups heading towards a roosting site. The image of this triplet was captured just as the sun was setting behind me using a 400 mm telephoto lens.

Sandhill cranes roost in increasingly large groups during October. Congregating in marshes overnight for safety, they leave in small groups during the morning to forage for food.
